My Life as a Eom Writer

The article was published by The Straits Times, Singapore’s widest-read newspaper. The article talked about the initiative to promote family time by inviting organizations to release their employees early on the event day so they can have family dinner together. Notwithstanding its decreasing number of people signing up, declination in participation is extraneous as more companies released the employees owing to that day without officially signing up. This shows that an initiative does not have to be tangible and numbers justified by data to show that it is successful (Mauboussin, 2012). Sole reminder of the significance of a family wheedle participants, ergo, taken from one of the cases of the article, talk sessions about the importance of family time can be held at schools and at workplaces because witnessing the enjoyment and happiness produced in someone’s family will instigate others to follow (JobsDB, 2014), for instance, people will be more eager to hold the same house competition hearing the fun and memorable experience shared by Ong’s household. However, limitation of this initiative is that albeit it helps to instil the importance of having quality family time into people’s mind, the event is not held too regularly i.e. once a year such that the impact may not be long-lasting. On this account, I propose an interactive game for families to participate in. In this game, children and parents are separated to 2 different rooms. They are to answer a form of 10 questions about the other person(s). The questions are a mixture of personal and trivial questions about the individuals. People are assured that the forms will be destroyed to safeguard personal privacy. Once the timing is started, the child and parent will have to come from both sides and answer each question. Every question answered correctly (verbally), the door will open for them to enter the next room. The timing will stop when they meet each other in the centre. (11th room out of the 21 rooms available). If families are stuck, they can choose to call a family member (extended possible), play charades (act it out), or do the whisper challenge (shout it out and guess). The family that takes the shortest time to finish the game will be contacted and given the photograph of all the participating family members taken secretly as a prize. This escape-room styled game is popular amongst both Singaporean parents and children, thus will haul their participations (Kaur, 2015).

Assumption is that families do not spend sufficient time together, they will face difficulty while answering the questions. After the game, the families will be catalysed to understand each other as they realize they do not actually know each other that well. Also, since personal feelings and experiences are shared, the family will know more about each other. Hence, they will gain empathy for one another as they are better able to understand things from each other’s perspectives and to relate to themselves better. This will solve the root causes stated in our project task: family time is taken lightly and the lack of sympathy amongst family due to the different life experiences. Limitation is that people may not be willing to share their personal matters to even a known member of the family if in the first place they have not had the trust towards each other and still perceive their personal data as easily endangered. Dealing with this situation, the questions asked to families can be made more general, and that families may be able to choose the “level of privacy” of the questions, so that they are more willing to participate.
