| 2023 Christmas Gift |
This week unfurled like a tapestry of unexpected moments, blending celebration, challenges, and a sprinkle of enchanting encounters.
The backdrop was the celebration of one of our host family children's birthdays at Ivy & Dick's, a joyous occasion intertwining Christmas festivities and the exchange of heartfelt gifts. Amidst the laughter and shared warmth, I received a beautiful dome-shaped cup adorned with Christmas glitters. A simple yet charming token, it spoke volumes of the thoughtfulness woven into each present.
The canvas of the week painted itself with hues of busyness, punctuated by a trinity of malingering episodes at Singgong Elementary. Twice, the whims of mood swung me into reluctant inertia, while once, the tyranny of the snooze button held me captive in the morning hush.
"not once, not twice, but thrice"
A more literal challenge manifested in the form of my tires—flattened not once or twice, but three times. A toll of NTD2200 echoed in the air, a melody of frustration. Yet, amidst the chorus of complaints, a coworker's wisdom emerged like a beacon: "those are miracles that saved you from potential accidents." A shift in perspective, revealing the hidden blessings within the inconveniences.
Now, let's talk about Sishu, particularly Ms. Eva's class (503)—a sanctuary of freedom and connection. The lesson plans breathe with liberty, a stark contrast to the constraints felt in Singgong, the very reason for my sporadic bouts of malingering. Ms. Eva and I ventured deeper into conversations, delving into New Year's plans and shared Christmas festivities. A gesture of goodwill unfolded in the form of a Family Mart caramel coffee latte, a Christmas treat she welcomed with gratitude. A hope whispered beneath the breath of my words—an almighty wish for a romantic chance next year.

And then, Class 503—the epitome of sweetness and innocence. Little voices echoed with eagerness, and their receptiveness to every lesson warmed my heart. A puny girl with glasses, her innocence radiating, pledged a present for the upcoming week.
"Teacher, next week I'll bring you a present", with broken English, conveyed with such innocence and naivity, and out of nowhere. My heart was melted with such cuteness.
The promise, unexpected and endearing, left a smile etched upon my face.
As the week folds into the cocoon of memory, I find myself basking in the glow of these moments. A week that, despite its challenges, concludes with a smile—a testament to the magic woven into the tapestry of everyday life.
Here's to the beauty of unexpected joys,
Steven
